The Siege of Vienna ended when two Turkish spies were caught inside the city.
They were tortured and revealed that the Turks intended setting a mine under the city walls.
Inside the city in properties adjacent to the walls bowls of water were placed on the floor of the cellars and constantly watched. The tunnelling operation was betrayed by ripples and a section inside that section of wall was fortified.
When the mine was set the Turkish Janissaries broke into a prepared "killing zone" instead of an open city as they had hoped.
With the failure of this assault the siege was lifted and it marked the high tide of Ottoman conquest as it was Suleiman the Magnificent's first defeat, his last was at the Great Siege of Malta in 1565.
