Work experience at the Foreign Office? Not if you’re a middle class white male



William Hague was last night plunged into a row over new ­Foreign Office rules which ban white males from gaining work experience at his department.

The Foreign Secretary was challenged to explain why his ­official work placement schemes specifically ban white, middle-class males from applying for the £367-a-week positions.

Under the tightly-drawn rules, only women, people from ethnic ­minorities and the ­disabled are ­entitled to apply for a chance to work at one of the great offices of state.

The placements give students a head start in the battle to win ­coveted jobs in the diplomatic service and possibly rise through the ranks to become an ambassador. Only one category of non-minority male applicants stand a chance – those whose families are poor enough to entitle them to qualify for a full student maintenance grant.

The bizarre ‘middle-class male’ ban came to light after Tory MP Dominic Raab was contacted by an irate ­constituent who tried to obtain work experience at the department.

Esher MP Mr Raab, an ­international lawyer who worked at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) for six years, said last night: ‘I am raising this issue on behalf of a ­disappointed constituent barred from even applying for Foreign Office work experience because he did not fit the social quota criteria.

‘We surely need to scale back the unfair political correctness of the last Government. But we will not end discrimination in our society by introducing it through the back door, which is what positive discrimination like this does.’

Mr Raab has now written to Mr Hague asking him to intervene and review the work placement rules.

The Foreign Office, which employs 20,000 staff in the UK and around the world, operates three work ­placement schemes:

* A summer development programme open to ‘talented individuals’ from black or ethnic minority backgrounds;
* A summer placement scheme for ‘talented students’ with a registered disability; and
* A university placement scheme open to female students, students from an ethnic minority background and students who come from a household with an income of £25,000 or lower.

Westminster sources last night said the programmes came about after Robin Cook, the former Labour Foreign Secretary, arrived at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s headquarters in Whitehall and was horrified to see so many former public schoolboys working there.

Last night, the FCO insisted the schemes were legal and were designed to appeal to students who might not normally consider a career in the FCO.


A spokeswoman said: ‘This includes students from an ethnic minority background and those with a disability, as well as ­students who are in receipt of a full maintenance grant.’

The spokeswoman added: ‘People from these backgrounds are currently under-represented in the FCO.

'We believe that by having a more diverse and multicultural workforce the FCO is better able to represent British interests around the world.’

There was ‘absolutely no discrimination’ in the department’s normal job recruitment process, she insisted.

But in a later statement, the FCO said the work experience schemes would now ‘be placed under review’.

The Afghanistan War, Nothing British About the BNP and the Murdoch Media

I am getting sick and tired of the scumbags in Nothing British About the BNP, James Bethel and Tim Montgomery, the idiots that run Harrys Place and the Murdoch media empire exploiting the families of dead British soldiers.

They accuse the BNP of exploiting dead British soldiers when we use their images in our videos and leaflets, but it is not we who can be accused of exploiting the dead, it is them.

The only real exploitation going on here is Nothing British About the BNP, a tory front group, using the families of dead British soldiers to attack the BNP and Harrys Place doing the same.

Both the Tories and Harrys Place supported the illegal war in Iraq that killed our troops.

The BNP would never have sent British troops to die in the illegal war in Iraq and in Afghanistan.

Nor would the BNP have cut the defence budget to send them under equipped to fight in those wars which has led to many of their deaths.

Nothing British, by getting a load of Tory supporting generals to attack the BNP, have disgraced the army and politicised the army.

The BNP have never pulled a load of retired generals chasing seats in the House of Lords to peddle Tory nonsense via the tory yellow press. These same generals were complicit in the illegal war.

As for the image used in the BNP video.

That image was an image used widely in the media and taken at a public event.

The murdoch papers used that image in their papers to sell their papers and profit from the paper sales, and they did not donate any money to any of the families of dead British soldiers when using those images.

Nor have they ever given any money to any charities for British soldiers even though they have printed thousands upon thousands of similar images in their papers.

The newspapers have exploited the dead by directly profiting from the images they print in their papers and at the same time print propaganda to continue the wars.

The only moral meaning in their deaths must be that the war must end, as there is no morality in using their deaths to perpetuate suffering, war and death.

It is natural for grieving families to seek a meaning to the sacrifice of their loved ones, but for those who understand the true nature of the conflict and the lies which have been used by corrupt politicians to start the war and continue the war, what is more important is that no more soldiers die in their illegal wars.

In order to fight this ongoing insane war then the public have to be reminded of the fact that British soldiers are dying and being maimed in it.

That means those who want to hide the fact that our troops are dying and being maimed by hiding the images of the dead and wounded in order to allow this war to continue are complicit in the deaths of our troops, and by attacking the BNP who want the war to stop, are acting as war propagandists and peddling pro-war propaganda.

Note that the Tory Party policy to continue the Afghanistan War is the same position as Nothing British About the BNP and Harrys Place and the Murdoch Media that support the Tories - and who also support a war on Iran.

(3) * Pull out of our commitments to NATO.

Corporal Punishment must be restored in our society along with capital punishment.

Prison doesnt work, we all know that.

When prisons are holiday camps that neither punish nor rehabilitate, then coporal punishment must be used as a coercive mechanism in society.

It is the fact we are a pathetic, mewling 'gentle democracy' to use the pathetic and insipid language of the Tory Toffs, that has destroyed our society.

Prison at the moment works only in relation to drug addicts who when in prison are unable to steal to fund their crime.

Prisons do not punish nor rehabilitate, and keeping drugs addicts in prison is costly, labour intensive and stupid.

Seeing as most crime is caused by drug addicts then we need a new form of preventive detention for such addicts in the community where they are supplied the drugs to get them out crime and are monitored in their own homes, which I have explained many times in relation to my demands for a reformed drugs policy.

The minute a drug addict under a community preventive order steals, uses illegal streets drugs or breaks the term of their order - they are then sent to prisons where they are subjected to hard labour, mandatory rehabilitation and weekly drugs tests.

The incentive for drug addicts not to steal to buy drugs nor sell drugs to buy drugs is that their drugs will be prescribed to them if they agree to abide by the terms of the order - and if they break that order just once then they go to prison.

In less than a year drug crime will plummet in the UK by around 95 %.

For contract killers, gangster killers, repeat paedophiles, convicted terrorists etc these must be executed after conviction, primarily to save money and protect society.

Professional non-violent criminals must also be housed in prison camps, not holiday camps disguised as prisons and forced to work in prison to pay for their families and restitution to their victims.

All forms of anti-social behaviour in our communities must be punished with floggings.

Bring back the birch.

Young people are not ashamed of being criminals, in fact they gain kudos from it.

Therefore in order to act as a deterrent then we must impose floggings, a return of the stocks and community punishments.

Before a young person gets caught in the cogs of the criminal justice system and then piped into prison, they must have an intervention with corporal punishment.

For instance - a 16 year old gets drunk and smashes a window in the street and attacks someone.

Normally they would either get taken off on a safari in Kenya or let off with a warning.

If they did that for about ten times they might eventually go to court and be given an tag and a curfew.

Having the tag makes them look like heroes to their peers, so they gain kudos from their crimes. If they persist in crimes they may eventually get sent to prison - but this prison will be a social workers holiday camp staffed by tarquins and mirandas who treat them as victims.

When they come out they gain kudos amongst their peers for being in prison, gain more of a reputation for having been in prison and also get to meet better criminals in prison who then teach them how to be better criminals = a new career criminal is born.

All this costs hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The answer is to intervene with a community punishment at the first offence and then corporal punishment at the time of the second offence.

If they are convicted of a similar offence after community punishment they should face ten strokes of the birch.

Offend again - make it twenty strokes of the birch and throw them in the stocks so that local people can throw rotten vegetables at them for a few hours.

Criminals stop committing crime only when they understand how it feels to be a victim, how it feels to be humiliated and how it feels to be unable to defend oneself.

It is this lack of 'reciprocated victimhood' that means criminals come to see themselves as somehow above the level of their victims.

Most criminals have only contempt for their victims and society, as they have been allowed to develop a mindset that they are 'strong', that their crimes gain them respect from their peers and that the punishment is a joke to them.

We must teach them that the punishment is harsh and painful, that society is far more powerful than them and devise punishments that are shameful and humiliating and that lower their status in the eyes of their peers so that they gain no kudos either from the crime nor the punishment.

A few private floggings where the victim is allowed to watch the criminal being flogged will change many criminals minds about retaining a career in crime.

A few public instances of the stocks for anti-social scumbags that terrorise communities will lower their status in the eyes of their peers and communities.

A few public work schemes where criminals on their first offence have to sweep the streets dressed in pink tutu's, pink wellington boots and wearing clown make up should make them feel stupid, humiliated and powerless - exactly as their victims felt.

That way they learn empathy and get no kudos from their peers whilst they are being laughed at by people.

Offend again - ten strokes of the birch.

Offend again twenty strokes and into the stocks.

Offend again - prison camps and hard labour.

I guarantee you that within three years anti-social crime will almost vanish.

Whilst we cull the serious criminals with executions at the top of the criminal hierarchy thereby deterring serious offenders, we also cut the numbers of repeat offenders by ensuring that young criminals are so traumatised by their experiences of involvement in criminality at the time of their first or second offence that they do not go on to re-offend.

That way we save them from a career as criminals, protect society and save money.

As we are also imposing new preventive detention laws on hard drugs addicts, who commit most theft and burglaries etc, then we also cut the numbers of crimes radically.

Its a Win / Win.

The alarming regularity with which the Tory Toff James Bethell and his Nothing British About The BNP blog appears like a Jack In The Box in newspaper articles in the Zionist media like The Sun, owned by the arch Zionist Rupert Murdoch, reveals both the closeness between the Tories and the Zionist lobby, as revealed in the recent Channel4 TV documentary The Israel Lobby, and the Nothing British About the BNP site.

It appears that Nothing British About the BNP serves the interests of Israel before Britain, and James Bethell is a typical Tory Zionist stooge.

As for the issue of Gibraltar, there is no way a BNP government would ever surrender Gibraltar, especially to the current crop of sleazy Spanish socialists nor their sleazy Spanish Conservative Zionist counterparts.

Once a decent Spanish Nationalist government was elected, and one which the BNP had strong links too as part of a Pan-European Nationalist Movement, then if the choice came between surrendering Gibraltar to Islam or preserving Gibraltar by working with a Spanish government who would be prepared to fight and eradicate Islamic terrorists and pirates coming from North Africa and who are attacking ships, local people and land in the Mediterranean including Gibraltar, then of course we would work with our Spanish nationalist allies to defend Gibraltar, Spain and Europe from the Islamist menace.

The threat to Gibraltar is two fold - first from Islamic terrorists with British passports going to the island and using it as a base for terrorism and also from Islamic pirates coming from North Africa and attacking the Mediterranean coast, the same sort of piracy that once devastated the coasts of England and Ireland in the 18th century.

Our duty is to protect the British people of Gibraltar and also work with Spain to ensure their national security.

THE BNP would hand the key outpost of Gibraltar to Spain in an astonishing betrayal of its 30,000 British citizens.

The move would also deprive the UK of a naval base - defended bitterly for more than 300 years - of huge strategic importance.

Party leader Nick Griffin, elected as an MEP in June, made the offer at a fascist rally in Madrid last week to suck up to European extremists.

His bizarre reasoning is that it would help the Spanish combat radicals in nearby northern Africa.

Deceitful Griffin told fellow fanatics: "Taking into account the geographical situation of Gibraltar and the Muslim threat on its door, I would prefer to see a Spanish flag fly in Gibraltar before an Islamic one." He added: "It would be much easier to sort it out if we had nationalist governments in Britain and Spain because it would then be an agreement between equals."

The gaffe was exposed by James Bethell, founder of anti-BNP pressure group Nothing British.

Mr Bethell - favourite to be selected by the Tories to fight for the seat of Gosport, Hants - said: "Nick Griffin talks about protecting our national interest but he would surrender our sovereignty to Spanish fascists in a heartbeat.

"The only flag that should be flying over the Rock is the Union Jack."

A recent referendum on the island, off the southern tip of Spain, saw 99.64 per cent vote to remain British.

Alister Cooling's political journey

Alister_cooling Alister was recently on Castaway alongside Clare Hilley. Here he gives a very personal account of his political journey from a Labour-voting family in Leeds to an active member of Croydon CF.

Way back on May the 2nd 1997 I reached the age of 15. Something else equally as significant happened that day, something that would change the course of my life.

Tony Blair was appointed by the Queen as Prime Minister.

Before this I had little or no interaction with politics whatsoever, so with this being the first big political upheaval that I can remember experiencing, I sat down with my dad and asked him, what I thought, a straight forward question.

I asked him who he had voted for.

His response was one that shocked me. Not so much who he had voted for but his reasoning.

He gave me the answer of ‘Labour’, to which I asked ‘why’?

He looked at me quizzically then decided to be honest.

I’ll never forget the words and tone he used.

“Because everyone else is”.

Everyone else!

For years I had been told by my father to be an individual, be who I am and don’t let anyone tell me to change and here he was going with the ‘pack’.

I was, as you can imagine, quite shocked. I had to know his reasoning for this.

Had he said that he had always been a Labour voter, or that he didn’t know who else to vote for, it would have been OK, but this annoyed me.

After that, I could not sit by and not understand politics. I didn’t know if I believed in Labour, the Conservatives or even the Monster Raving loony Party, I just knew I couldn’t not know.

So I spent the next couple of weeks researching who I was. I wanted to know that by the next Election I would be able to vote for something I believe in, something that I thought would be best for myself, my friends, my family and ultimately the country I love.

It happened that I believed more in the Conservative Party than any other. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a perfect match, still isn’t, but my ideals tallied more so it seemed that I had no choice.

My choice was made, so all I had to do was say with pride who I was.

BIG Mistake.

Seacroft, the part of Leeds I’m from, as great a place as it is, has been Labour for a LONG time(and for a while to come I wouldn’t wonder) so when a 15 year old had these views, well mocking is not quite the word for the torrent of abuse I got from people.

I had to constantly defend my beliefs. That wasn’t so bad, I kind of expected it, and the thing was I felt so alone. I didn’t know any other members of the conservative party.

I swear, it was really weird, almost like those stories where people have to pretend to be something they’re not.

If I was telling people I was a Gay Alien from Omicron Persei 8, then fair enough, but these were simple political beliefs.

Who would have believed such a stigma associated with a political party?

Again, I didn’t mind, I wore my blue everywhere I went and wasn’t afraid to tell people where I felt they were wrong (or right – but that rarely happened).

After some time, I went on to University. Sadly, I was so busy doing a full time course, a full time job AND a part time job to make enough money to survive (thanks to some brilliant work on student tuition fees) as well as extra curricular stuff to benefit my chosen degree, I had no time to look into any student Conservative societies.

The real world was my next step.

University ended. Things were looking decidedly rosy, I had graduated top of my class, I had a string of awards from the extra curricular and I was even engaged to an exotically beautiful woman. I had life dreams that actually included some form of political career, something in local council maybe, until something happened to stop that.

My fiancé died. I do not write this for sympathy, I write it because of the effect it had on me.

I lost the woman I loved to a guy who had too much to drink and he was given a suspended sentence.

I have been ale to forgive the guy, but it still upset me that he broke a law, took a life and was able to walk free.

This sent me into a pit. I lost sight of everything that meant anything to me.

I lost myself into a world of denial that I didn’t know I was in (I know, you don’t know you don’t know until you know, ya know).

Well the point of this is after everything I went through, it would be a physical journey of 20,000+ miles at the beginning of this year (2007) that would allow me to be back to the ‘old me’ and be able to embrace the political side of life of a party I love. I became an original member of a silly TV show called Castaway. You may have heard of it, in fact one of these blogs was written by someone I met there.

I was faced with someone who believed a lot of what I believed, but she had something different.

She had a support network that enabled her to be who she wanted to be, do what she wanted to do and feel comfortable and free to say what she wanted to say.

I could not believe it, I was unbelievably happy to meet someone with my ideals and having so much positivity about it.

I knew what I had to do; I had to become her friend.

I am pleased to say that after that show, I have remained firm friends with her, I joined South Croydon CF and even got elected to the post of ‘Membership Officer’ at a recent AGM. I have also met, through CF and Ms Hilley, a wealth of interesting and supportive people, people who have a shared interest yet come from all walks of life.

It amazes me how focused the group of people are and how important the CF is to people but I’m saddened too.

I remember back to my time as a 15 year old, a time when I found difficulty in vocalizing my beliefs, a time when I wanted to be active.

The CF is all new to me, but it is a great thing. I do believe it has a place in the political world, giving young people the ability to get them heard.

I have many things I wish to do, to help promote the CF, to get the young people that want their voices heard and luckily for me, I have the ear of the local chairman.

A young Tory has been jailed for six months after he admitted downloading sickening child porn.

Alister Cooling, 27, who writes for the Conservative Home website and campaigned for London Mayor Boris Johnson, owned films featuring girls as young as five being abused.

The pervert, who hoped to be an MP and featured on the BBC reality TV show Castaway, also downloaded a bestiality film.

Some of the films hit the highest level of the abuse scale used by police to grade child porn.

Sentencing Cooling at Croydon crown court last Friday, Judge Stephen Waller said: "The contents of these images are horrifying. Any right thinking person could not but be repulsed. By downloading this material you give encouragement to people who are filming the abuse and suffering of children."

Cooling at first told police he downloaded the films by accident - but eventually broke down and admitted he was "obsessed". The charges against him included making indecent images and possession of extreme porn. He will serve half his sentence in jail then be freed on licence.

Cooling, who was pictured on a Gay Pride march with Mr Johnson last year, was a committee member of the Lesbian Gay and Bi Tory group. On Castaway two years ago, Cooling, of Croydon, South London, was described as the "ultimate coach potato" and said he would miss his computer most while on the island.

A website Cooling used to bid for acting roles lists his friends as his "TV, computer and hi-fi" and gives his influences as television shows Buffy and Angel.

Pro-Israel lobby group bankrolling Tories, film claims

Pro-Israeli organisations in Britain look set to see their influence increase if the Conservatives win the next election, a film scrutinising the activities of a powerful but little-known lobby warns today.

At least half of the shadow cabinet are members of the Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI), according to a Dispatches programme being screened on Channel 4. The programme-makers describe the CFI as "beyond doubt the most well- connected and probably the best funded of all Westminster lobbying groups".

Inside Britain's Israel Lobby claims that donations to the Conservative party "from all CFI members and their businesses add up to well over £10m over the last eight years". CFI has disputed the figure and called the film "deeply flawed".

The programme also describes how David Cameron allegedly accepted a £15,000 donation from Poju Zabludowicz, a Finnish billionaire who chairs Bicom (the Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre). Zabludowizc, the film reveals, has business interests in an illegal West Bank settlement. He also gave £50,000 to Conservative Central Office. Zabludowicz says his contributions "are a matter of public record".

William Hague allegedly accepted personal donations from CFI board members totalling tens of thousands of pounds after being appointed shadow foreign secretary. More than £30,000 from CFI supporters went to the campaign funds of members of Cameron's team who were first elected in 2005, the film claims, using publicly available information.

The programme-makers say that while this is legal, it is not well-known.

The CFI director, Stuart Polak, told the Guardian the figure of more than £10m is not supported by any facts. "It is fictitious, misleading and damaging to the reputation of CFI and its supporters," he said.

"CFI as an organisation has donated only £30,000 since 2005. Each of these donations has been made transparently and publicly registered. In addition to this £30,000, it is undoubtedly the case that some of our supporters have also chosen, separately, to donate to the party as individuals."

Two years ago a controversial study by American academics Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer explored the influence of the Israel lobby over US foreign policy. But Britain's pro-Israel organisations have been subjected to far less scrutiny.

"The pro-Israel lobby … is the most powerful political lobby," Michael Mates, a Conservative MP and privy councillor, told the film-makers. "There's nothing to touch them."

Hague fell out with CFI after describing Israel's 2006 attack on Lebanon – in retaliation for a Hezbollah raid – as "disproportionate" and allegedly faced threats to withdraw funding from Lord Kalms, a major Tory donor and CFI member, the film reports.

Cameron later gave an undertaking not to use the word again, the programme claims. At a CFI dinner this June the party leader made no mention of the death toll in the Gaza war – 1,370 Palestinians and 13 Israelis. Instead he commended Israel because "it strives to protect innocent life".

Sir Richard Dalton, a former British diplomat who served as consul-general in Jerusalem and ambassador to Libya and Iran, said: "I don't believe, and I don't think anybody else believes these contributions come with no strings attached."

Labour Friends of Israel, another key group, is described as being "less unquestioning in its support of the Israeli government than CFI". But it has taken more MPs on free trips to Israel than any other group – more than 60 since 2001.

CFI has also flown over 30 Tory parliamentary candidates to Israel on free trips in the last three years.

Dispatches describes how when the presenter Jonathan Dimbleby criticised a pro-Israel campaign against the BBC's Middle East editor, Jeremy Bowen, Dimbleby was the subject of a complaint and, according to the programme, is now under investigation by the BBC Trust.

Bicom, like the party-affiliated groups, organises briefings and trips to Israel for journalists, including Guardian staff. It sought to dismiss the significance of Zabludowicz's interest in a shopping mall in Ma'aleh Adumim, a settlement built on territory occupied in the 1967 war and which Israel would hope to retain.

Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, has rebuffed demands by Barack Obama for a settlement freeze.

Bicom's chief executive, Lorna Fitzsimons, said: "The private business interests of any of our funders – including our chairman – have absolutely no impact on Bicom's work.

"We are an independent organisation and we guard our reputation fiercely. We work with journalists to help them better understand the Middle East.

"We show Israel, warts and all, from the left to the right and we have a strict policy that on every journalist trip we go to the Palestinian Authority to give journalists unfettered access to Palestinian voices."

If they had resigned before the war went ahead then perhaps we could have avoided the Iraq War abd Afghan invasions, but they didnt.

Therefore they stand accused of a dereliction of duty.

2) That whilst the Afghanistan War is still going on, and British troops dying day after they have chosen to attack the BNP instead of demanding an immediate end to the Afghanistan war and the recall of all British troops to the UK.

They have not done this, instead they attack the BNP who has never sent any British troops to die in illegal foreign wars.

This is also a cowardly dereliction of their duty to the soldiers they profess to represent and 'care' for.

If they truly cared for their troops then they would demand the immediate return to Britain of all British troops from Afghanistan on the grounds that the war in Afghanistan is unwinnable, that we went to war for oil in Iraq and to protect oil and gas pipelines in Afghanistan, that the troops are under equipped and that lack of air support and helicopters has enabled the Taliban to slaughter our troops with IED's, that you cannot export and impose democracy by force and that the British troops wounded in the war have been let down with their medical care in the UK, had their benefits stolen from them by the Labour government and that with a quarter of the people in prisons being ex-servicemen many suffering from PTSD and a quarter of the homeless on our streets being ex-servicemen that British society and successive British government have betrayed our troops.

But they wont say that.

They wont say it because its against tory policy.

Former deputy mayor of London Ian Clement has been given a suspended jail term of 12 weeks for fraudulently claiming the cost of restaurant meals.

He admitted making three unauthorised expense claims totalling £156, while working at City Hall in November 2008.

Two further counts of fraud against Clement, 44, were discharged at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

The judge also ordered Mayor Boris Johnson's former aide, from Crayford, to do 100 hours community work.


After pleading guilty to the charges Clement said: "I have failed to live up to the high standards of office that were properly expected of me."

Clement stepped down as deputy mayor for external relations in June.

He served as leader of Bexley Council from May 2006 until May 2008.

Sentencing District Judge Quentin Purdy said Clement had "fragrantly and arrogantly" abused public money.

"You must have known full well when questioned in relation to these matters of the manifest bogusness of the claims you were making.

"That said, I accept you have lost much as a direct result of your wrongdoing.

"You knew very well what was required when using a corporate credit card and you saw yourself as somehow above the rules," he said.

'Let down many'

The court heard he paid for unauthorised restaurant meals on his card.

Personal use of a corporate credit card is a breach of City Hall regulations.

Clement said: "I have given many years of dedicated public service to London, which has been my pride, my passion and my life. That is now over.

"There is no denial in regards to my responsibility.

"I very much regret and indeed am truly sorry for my actions and that these have let down many good people, my family, my friends and colleagues including and not least, the mayor of London."

Judge Purdy suspended Clement's jail sentence for 18 months and has imposed a curfew of between 9pm and 6am for 12 weeks.

Clements was also ordered to pay £1,000 in prosecution costs.

When Boris Johnson unveiled his first appointment in the afterglow of his victory over Ken Livingstone, the arrival of Ray Lewis on London's political scene was widely acclaimed as a shrewd and farsighted move.

The youth worker, who advocated tough love and strict discipline for the capital's wayward teenagers, seemed the perfect foil for the Etonian desperate to improve his reputation among London's ethnic minority communities.

But when Lewis resigned last night amid allegations of financial misconduct and inappropriate behaviour following a Guardian investigation, the heady days of early May were a distant memory.

It was the culmination of a series of exchanges that began on Wednesday when the Guardian approached the mayor's office with a list of questions about Lewis' past. On Thursday, Johnson declared he had "every confidence" in his "tremendous deputy".

Twenty-four hours later, following a day of frantic talks between Tory central office and City Hall, Johnson changed his mind accepting Lewis's resignation "with regret".

Last night, facing the press alone this time, Lewis told reporters: "I cannot allow things that I have been into, up to and around me to obscure the important business of this mayoral team.

"For this reason I must step down as deputy mayor for young people with immediate effect."

The resignation is the second blow to Johnson's administration in the past 12 days, following the resignation last month of a senior adviser, James McGrath, over comments about African-Caribbean migrants. It is also an embarrassment for other senior figures within the Conservative party - including David Cameron, the leader - who have fallen over themselves to embrace Lewis for his work with disadvantaged youngsters at the Eastside Young Leaders Academy, a project he set up in east London five years ago.

Last night Ken Livingstone was unforgiving about Johnson's difficulties. "In my entire eight years in office I suffered only one enforced resignation of any of my most senior officials, Lee Jasper - and that only after seven years - and this extreme contrast shows vividly the incompetence of Boris Johnson and his administration," he said.

"It is an equal crisis for David Cameron who, it should be remembered, chose to make his first photo opportunity as Tory leader with Ray Lewis."

Johnson said he would reappoint Lewis if he cleared his name but added that he had been "misled" over Lewis' claim to having been appointed a magistrate. The original allegations against Lewis centred on claims of financial irregularities and inappropriate behaviour during his time as a Church of England priest in the mid-1990s. It was claimed he had borrowed about £45,000 from parishioners including an elderly woman and a man with learning difficulties.

At Thursday's press conference Lewis dismissed the accusations as "complete rubbish" and pointed out that he was a justice of the peace - a claim backed at the time by Johnson. But yesterday, that claim was punctured when the Ministry of Justice said he not been appointed as a magistrate.

As he bemoaned the "drip, drip" of allegations last night, Lewis said he had been recommended to become a magistrate but not appointed. "It was that seeming duplicity that was the reason I asked to step down as deputy mayor," he said.

Johnson had claimed the allegations against Lewis only surfaced because some people had a dislike for Lewis' work with wayward boys, which the mayor characterised as a brave stand against a "stifling orthodoxy".

Johnson's attachment to his deputy was underlined on Andrew Marr's BBC Sunday programme last month. "[He was] one of the reasons I became so determined to become mayor. He just inspired me."

But last night political opponents were queuing up to lampoon the mayor. John Biggs, London Labour assembly member, said: "Obviously we have to question our glorious mayor's judgement. He needs to get a grip or it will rebound on him again." Another assembly member, Murad Quereshi, said Lewis' resignation raised questions about where the capital was heading. "We have already lost one senior adviser to allegations of racism and now we have lost Ray Lewis ..." said Quereshi. "It just makes you wonder what the future holds for this administration."

The Church of England confirmed Lewis was on the "Lambeth list" which banned him from working as a priest in England between 1999 and 2005. The Rev Chris Newland, chaplain to the Bishop of Chelmsford, said the church had issued the ban because "things had been alleged against him". The ban allowed Lewis to call himself a priest, but not to minister.
